Thanks to a historic investment by the Texas Legislature, the Texas A&M Forest Service has approved more than $164 million in funding for volunteer fire departments across the state.

Seven Bowie County departments, including Hooks Volunteer Fire Department, will share about $1.7 million in grants. Hooks plans to use its portion to buy a new water tank truck and slip-on unit.

Fire Chief Brandon Whitehurst says the funds will help provide better equipment and improve safety as call volumes continue to rise.
