Texarkana Firefighters Warn of Growing Staffing Crisis

The Texarkana, Texas Firefighters Association says the department is facing a serious hiring and retention crisis that could threaten public safety.

The Texarkana, Texas Firefighters Association says the department is facing a serious hiring and retention crisis that could threaten public safety.
Firefighters report the city is now at the bottom of the pay scale compared to similar departments across the region, leading to a loss of personnel and fewer qualified applicants.

In the last two years, only a handful of applicants have made it through the hiring process, and many new hires have already left for higher-paying cities. Some candidates even declined job offers after realizing they’d take a pay cut.

The association warns that upcoming retirements, combined with ongoing departures, could leave Texarkana dangerously understaffed. They’re urging residents to contact city leaders and push for competitive pay and long-term staffing solutions.
