The Texarkana Regional Airport is getting a $22 million boost from the state of Texas to help fund a major runway expansion. Governor Greg Abbott approved the funding, which supports a $73 million project to extend and strengthen the runway and taxiway, allowing the airport to handle large cargo aircraft like Boeing 747s.
Airport Director Paul Mehrlich says the project will help transform the airport into a hub for cargo and aircraft maintenance. A $35 million deal is also in the works with a paint company planning to build four hangars and bring 150 jobs averaging $50,000 a year.
The airport is owned by Texarkana, Arkansas and Texas, with Arkansas contributing nearly $17 million and the federal government adding $8 million. The runway is set for completion in early 2027, with hangar construction breaking ground next year.
