Texarkana will see major improvements to pedestrian and bicycle access in 2026, thanks to a project funded mainly through TxDOT’s Transportation Alternatives program. A smaller portion comes from Safe Routes to Schools.
The plan includes building 2.2 miles of new sidewalks along College Drive from Robison Road to Highway 71, along with new crossing signals and ramps. TxDOT engineer Tommy Bruce says the upgrades will improve safety and connect more residents to work, school, and other destinations.
Highway 19 Construction won the $2.5 million contract. Work begins in February 2026 and should take about 11 months.
